Interpretive HaikuDesign Aesthetics 2, Spring 2026

Prototypes and Process

The objective of this project was to interpret and capture the essence of a traditional Japanese haiku in a non-literal visual and typographic interpretive sequence. To this end, I experimented with graphic elements and expressive typography to create a composition that felt like it was swooping.

Colour Tests

Once I had a final design, I needed to tweak the colour palette and placement. I knew I wanted something not distracting that was reminiscent of the iridescent sheen of a pidgeon. It also had to have high contrast and be printer friendly. After each round of colour, I printed the design and marked what could be changed.
